About location

The Kumano Kodo and Nachi

The Kumano Kodo is a network of five ancient pilgrimage routes that weave across the Kii Peninsula, guiding travelers for more than a thousand years. Among them, Hokoji lies along the Ohechi Route — a scenic coastal path once traveled by pilgrims making their long journey to Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine, where waterfalls, forests, and the sea meet in harmony.

Here, nature and faith remain deeply intertwined, shaping one of Japan’s most sacred landscapes.

Temples Without Priests

For centuries, temples along the Kumano Kodo have been the heart of village life, offering prayer, rest, and connection.
Today, many stand without priests, and the weight of care has fallen to aging residents whose efforts are reaching their limit.
Preserving these temples is about more than saving buildings. It is about protecting the living culture and faith that have bound the people of Nachi together for generations — a purpose that gave rise to the Nachi Fund.

The Nachi Fund

The Nachi Fund is an initiative to preserve and revitalize temples in the Nachi area. It was created to support temples that no longer have resident priests and to keep their cultural and spiritual roles alive within the community.

Led by Priest Nishiyama, who revitalized Daitaiji Temple and now cares for several temples in Nachi, the fund begins with Hokoji as its first project. Each restoration under the Nachi Fund aims to carry both the structure and the spirit of these sacred places into the future.

THE FIRST PROJECT

Hokoji Temple

Hokoji is the first project under the Nachi Fund. Founded in the Edo period as a sub-temple of Daitaiji, it once served as the spiritual and communal heart of village life. Though modest in scale, it carries more than two centuries of quiet devotion and remains closely connected to the people of Nachi.

Hokoji temple

The temple’s main hall, built in the Meiji era, preserves remarkable craftsmanship — a single-log ridge beam, hand-forged nails, and original earthen walls that have endured for generations. Surrounded by clear streams and mountain air, the village around Hokoji reflects the same spirit of generosity that once defined daily life here.

As visitor numbers along the Kumano Kodo continue to grow, finding accommodation in the area has become increasingly difficult. Daitaiji, which now operates as a temple lodging offering Zen meditation and other temple experiences, maintains an occupancy rate of over 80 percent. Hokoji will serve as a peaceful annex to meet this demand, offering travelers a private and reflective stay while continuing to function as a local evacuation site during emergencies.
