About location
Sado – an Island of Heritage and Nature
Sado Island, off the coast of Niigata Prefecture, is a place where nature, culture and history come together. Known for its dramatic coastlines, rich biodiversity and deep cultural roots, Sado offers visitors a glimpse into a Japan where traditions still shape daily life.
Once a place of exile for nobles and monks, the island absorbed the elegance of Kyoto while developing its own distinct character. Today, Sado is also known for its efforts in ecological farming, which have helped reintroduce the crested ibis to its skies.
Accessible from Tokyo by Shinkansen and ferry, Sado invites you to step into a slower rhythm, where you can reconnect with nature and explore living traditions.
About the property
The Hojo Heritage on Sado Island
The Hojo Heritage is a 350-year-old compound in the heart of Sado Island, made up of five traditional buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties or Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. Built across the Edo and Meiji periods, these structures blend samurai, merchant, and rural architecture, offering a rare chance to experience living history.
For seven generations, the Hojo family practiced traditional medicine here, caring for neighbors and preserving records that remain as cultural assets. Today, the Hojo Heritage quietly invites visitors to appreciate the island’s history and natural rhythms.
Preserving this officially protected property comes at a high cost. Restoration the Main House alone is estimated at 600 million yen—far beyond what an individual can manage, even with national support. To keep the property serving the community, the owner turned to PlanetDAO’s co-ownership model, inviting people to help preserve and bring new life to the Hojo Heritage together.
