About location

Bamboo Forest House is nestled on a secluded mountainside in Kamiyamaguchi, Hayama, Kanagawa, surrounded by tranquil bamboo forests. Historically, this area was home to terraced rice fields (tanada) and has long been a retreat for Japan’s imperial family. The region offers visitors a serene rural escape with its natural beauty and cultural significance. Conveniently, Zushi Station is just one hour away by train from Tokyo Station, while Haneda Airport is accessible by car. Additionally, Isshiki Beach, renowned as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, is only 15 minutes away.

About the property

Bamboo Forest House was once the home of Watanabe-san, a local farmer who handcrafted the pathways leading to the house. This tranquil property continues to be a hub for the Bamboo Craft Study Group, co-founded by Watanabe-san and his friend Katayama-san. For over 30 years, the group has created bamboo objects—ranging from household items to ceremonial pieces for temples—while also maintaining the surrounding bamboo forest. Though the house faces challenges such as an unreliable water system and the absence of proper bathroom facilities, its deep connection to nature, craft, and community continues to thrive. Katayama-san now leads the group, dedicated to preserving this legacy for future generations.

Local community

The local community plays a crucial role in maintaining the Bamboo Forest House and its traditions. Led by Katayama-san, the Bamboo Craft Study Group ensures the preservation of bamboo craftsmanship and the sustainable management of the bamboo forest. What began as a group of men crafting bamboo items has grown to include women and children, creating a strong bond within the Kamiyamaguchi community. With only eight members remaining, the group remains committed to keeping these traditions alive, despite the challenges of maintaining the property.
